Longtime Delaware County Daily Times sports writer Harry Chaykun has been named the recipient of the Robert Finucane Achievement Award, which is given annually to the “sports-oriented individual who has aspired to the top of their profession” by the Delco Athletes Hall of Fame.
The award is named after longtime Daily Times writer, editor, columnist and renaissance man Finucane.
Chaykun began working part-time with the Daily Times while still attending Saint Joseph’s University in 1967. He had two long stints as a sports staff writer and was sports editor for a time before retiring in 2011. Since then, Chaykun has worked as a local sports correspondent and is author of the weekly “In The Community” column, one of the newspaper’s most popular features.
Chaykun really made his mark at the newspaper and on the local sports scene when he began offering extensive coverage of girls high school sports in the late 1970s, one of the first writers in the region to do so.
Chaykun has won the Wakefield Journalism Award for continuing coverage of women’s lacrosse and in 2007, he was named the winner of the Jesse Abramson Award, given annually to a media member who has “consistently demonstrated a devotion to the Penn Relays.”
Chaykun is a member of the Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame, as well as the PA Sports Hall of Fame, Delaware County Chapter. He has worked as a high school official and assigner in football, basketball and track and field.
He will be honored at the annual awards dinner, to be held April 23 at the Concordville Inn.
