Ridley Roundup of fall fun

RIDLEY TOWNSHIP — Ridley School Board members recently approved an agreement for the school district and the Chester County Health Department to participate in a voluntary employee health COVID-19 surveillance testing program for staff working with k-12 students.

“The tests, which are both rapid, point of care tests, have been provided by the federal government,” Schools Superintendent Lee Ann Wentzel told board members.

“The purpose of the program is to provide quick testing for individuals who become symptomatic while on campus, to include being on the bus, or during school related activities, and achieve viral reduction by conducting surveillance of individuals on a regular, routine basis,” she added.

Wentzel said test resources are limited and no one is permitted to come to the school in order to be tested. Parents would need to grant consent prior to a suddenly symptomatic child being tested.

The board also approved the 2021-2022 preliminary budget proposal and the application for approval of Act 1 exception. The exceptions are for costs connected with employee pensions and special education services for the upcoming school year.

“We attempted to keep our projected increases under the Act 1 limit and utilize the normal budget timeline but it is not possible for next year’s budget process at this time,” Wentzel said. “….If the district gets approved for exceptions, it is an estimated additional $2,048,187 of revenue that could be available should the district need to use it.”

The preliminary 2021-2022 budget will be presented in May at the board meeting with final at the June meeting.

In another matter, a unique learning tool will be coming to the Lakeview Elementary School after the board approved the acceptance of the 2020 Hess Toy Truck STEM Kit. The kit is designed to help students learn Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics using the iconic Hess Toy Truck. The program was designed by Baylor College of Medicine Center for Educational Outreach.
