If all mankind were to disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos . - E.O. Wilson

NEWTOWN — How many Delaware County chefs can say that they’ve published two cookbooks, appeared on "The Today Show," been an invited guest on the "Rachel Ray Show" three times, taught cooking at a winery in Italy twice, and had a role in "The Irishman," sitting next to Robert DeNiro?
MEDIA — “Actress, musician, humanitarian, champion of the lost and friend to all,” was the opening of the program card for Celebrating the Life of Ann Crumb. The title says it all, according to Ruth Crumb, Ann’s aunt who developed the program.
'Lost In the Mail:' Writer who brought you the folks you meet at Wawa turns sights on postal service
The mail is one of those things taken for granted in the changing ways people deliver messages to each other. Where parchment and a wax seal delivered by horseback/carriage were the standards when the United States was created, a message to someone in a text from our phone is the new norm.
MARPLE — It was all about Italian at a recent gala at the Paxon Hollow Golf Club.
Who doesn’t like candy, right? So, there was no way that I was going to pass up an opportunity to preview Candytopia, the candy-coated adventure that “popped up” in Philly last week.
I’m always on the lookout for fun, new things to do in the area, so I couldn’t pass up an invitation to preview the upcoming 9th Annual Philadelphia Burger Brawl last Wednesday night. If you’re asking how it can be a “new” thing to do, when it’s the “9th annual,” the answer is because it’s new to me. I’m just late for the party. Although I never went to the Philly Burger Brawl before, it always sounded “interesting,” so off I went to the media tasting preview tour to see what’s up with all this burger-hoopla, year after year.

I did something that was different and enjoyable this week and I want to make a recommendation to anyone looking for something fun-- and free-- to do this summer, or anytime throughout the year. For my first time ever, I went with a group of friends to the taping of Quincy Harris’s talk show, "The Q" at Fox 29 Studio, 4th and Market streets, Philadelphia. I know that I am late for the party. The show has been on the air since Fall 2016. However, late or not, I am happy that I finally had the experience of being a part of the pre-recorded show’s live studio audience.

PHILADELPHIA — One of the perks of the news business is previewing events before they happen. Last week, at the invitation of the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District, I had the opportunity to stroll Passyunk Avenue in South Philly with other members of the press, hitting up a variety of the Avenue’s restaurants to sample a variety of out-of-this-world foods prepared by some of Philly’s best chefs.

"All plants are not created equal, particularly in their ability to support wildlife. Most of our native plant eaters are not able to eat alien plants. … Unless we restore native plants to our suburban ecosystems, the future of biodiversity in the United States is dim."
While taking classes toward a degree or some kind of certificate or certification always adds to personal and professional growth, there’s also a lot to be said for taking enrichment courses for no other reason than a desire to learn a new skill.
SPOTLIGHT ON HISTORY: Flags are small part of Delaware County Historical Society’s ties to the Irish
The green, white and orange Ireland and the “Erin Go Bragh” flags are tangible links to Delaware County’s Irish at the Delaware County Historical Society, although the articles and books in its collections share a fuller story.

For years, whenever I’d see or read about the famous Made in Pennsylvania products — like Peeps marshmallow chicks, Martin guitars, Slinky, Zippo lighters, Pyrex glassware, Harley Davidson, Gertrude Hawk chocolates and many others — I would always notice Byers’ Choice among them.
A Glen Riddle telegraph key in the Delaware County Historical Society’s collection is similar to the ones used on the battlefields of World War I and on the fateful night of the Titanic sinking.

It’s a story as old as time — coming up with excuses not to re-start my diet … or, as I’ve changed my way of thinking to say, “resume my healthy lifestyle.”
Tanks, nurses and doctors tending to the wounded and items such as Baldwin locomotives being unloaded off ships are among seldom seen photos of every aspect of the American participation in World War I contained in a thick, ornately covered book at the Delaware County Historical Society.

The lasting influence of some gifts ends when the gift is unwrapped; the lasting influence of other gifts exceeds a lifetime, affecting future generations. The gift of memorable childhood Christmases remains part of my personal and professional life today.
A ceramic Nativity scene preserves the spirit of the Christmas season as much as it does the history of a prominent Delaware County family.

May is recognized as Teacher Appreciation Month, but appreciating teachers demands a 12-month effort, and no time is better to show appreciation than this end-of-year holiday season.
Holidays can be such meaningful times, sometimes harboring heartfelt memories both personal and societal, brought to life by associated artifacts.

For 123 years, the Delaware County Historical Society has been the steward of the county’s most priceless treasures and the legacy preserved because of the ties the artifacts hold.

Election campaigns can be a multitude of things from inspirational to colorful to low-level mud-slinging fests, and one way to remember them and their namesakes is through the pins.
November is the month to be thankful for the family and friends in our lives and for the country we live in.

In my more than half century teaching, during a career that progressed from single-copy mimeograph reproductions to digital distributions, one teaching strategy has remained constant — the essay.
