Springfield took on the Haverford Fords on Feb. 11 in the last meet of the season, and Coach Dave Pecunia wanted a win for his seniors.
Starting with 120 pounds, Luke Charamella came out with a vengeance against Andrew Lee, almost pinning him in the first period. Charamella finally pinned Lee at 2:42.
In the 126-pound match, Dan Boyer battled Stefan Rozanski, coming out strong in the first period, 7-0. Boyer executed one of his signature moves, the tilt, several times during the match, but Rozanski hung tough, not letting Boyer pin him. Boyer went 9-0 for the major win.
Dennis Charamella made quick work of Ben Simonson, pinning him at 1:48 for the win at 132 pounds.
Senior Kelly Bartivic came out strong against Blake Ertner in the 138-pound match, and he was able to pin him in the third period at 5:20.
Joey Sciarrino moved down to wrestle at 145 pounds and battled a close match against David Tustin. Sciarrino finally pinned Tustin halfway through the third at 4:51.
In the 152-pound match, Tim Abbot went head-to-head with Wyatt Martin who is ranked third in the league, and Abbot was able to hold his own. After a scoreless first period, the second period ended 3-0 with Martin up. Abbot was able to score in the third, but Martin prevailed and took the win 5-1, but to Springfield, it was a win for Abbot for only giving up 3 points.
In the 160-pound match, senior Chris Patrikios grappled Dylan Glenn. Patrikios hung in for a scoreless first period, but then Glenn kicked it up a notch and took the win, 6-2.
Springfield then took losses at 170 and 182 pounds. In the 195-pound match, Justin Cicala battled John Tintera, starting with a scoreless first period and no takedowns. Cicala hung tough, but Tintera was able to take the win 7-0.
After forfeits for each side at 220 and 285, the last match of the night was coming up, and Springfield was up 34-27. Freshman Chris Sciarrino needed to win since Springfield would have to forfeit the 113-pound match, making the score 34-33. At 106-pounds, Sciarrino came out for a dominant first period against Vince Tavani. Sciarrino was then able to pin Tavani shortly into the second at 2:31. With the ref’s slap of the mat, the Springfield stands erupted; Springfield had won with a final score of Springfield 40, Haverford 33.
At Central League Champs this past weekend, Springfield had six wrestlers place. Placing third were Joey Sciarrino, Kelly Bartivic and Chris Sciarrino. Placing fourth were Dan Boyer and Luke Charamella. And Dennis Charamella placed fifth. They will move onto Districts this weekend.
