HAVERFORD – A homeless man was struck and killed Tuesday evening while crossing Township Line Road between Drexel Hill and Haverford Township, police said.
Police identified the man that was killed as Russell Carapella, 54, with no known fixed address.
The accident occurred at about 7:13 p.m. when Carapella crossed from the parking lot at the Dunkin Donuts on the Drexel Hill side of the street into the center of Township Line Road. As he approached the center of the road, he was hit by the pickup truck.
Haverford Township Police Chief John Viola said the driver was unable to see Carapella when he stepped in front of his truck, and he did not have time to apply the brakes.
“There was no speeding involved with the accident, but as a result of the investigation, drugs were found in the operator’s vehicle. He was not impaired, though,” Viola said.
The driver, Donald J. Nath Jr., 39, of Drexel Hill, was not expected to face any charges in connection with the accident. Still, he was being charged with possession of marijuana and suspected methamphetamine, according to police.
